Here’s where it gets fun. The show ran for six seasons, from 1990 to 1996. Will Smith aged right along with the show, growing from 21 to 27 years old by the final episode. That means we watched him go from a young actor finding his footing to a seasoned star who could carry a whole episode on his back.
Will Smith - Actor, Rapper, Producer
By season six, his character had graduated from college and was facing real-world decisions. It’s almost like we saw a double coming-of-age story: Will’s character matured, and so did Will himself. It’s rare to see that kind of parallel in a sitcom, and it’s part of why the show still hits so hard today.
Fun Comparisons: You vs. Will Smith
Let’s make this personal. Most people start their first “real job” in their mid-20s, right? Will Smith was already finishing a TV series at 27. By the time you’re that age, you might be asking for a promotion; Will was asking for movie roles that would turn him into the biggest star on the planet.
And here’s a head-scratcher: the actor who played his on-screen cousin, Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro), was actually older than Will. Alfonso was 23 when the show started, while Will was 21. So Carlton, the preppy dork, was technically the senior in real life. How’s that for a plot twist?
