Simple economics. Turkeys are less efficient than chickens. They start laying later in life (around seven months old compared to five months for chickens), and they lay fewer eggs overall.
Farmers have to choose: raise turkeys for meat or raise them for eggs. Spoiler alert—we love turkey legs and turkey sandwiches way more than turkey omelets.
Plus, turkey eggs have a thicker shell and a different membrane, which makes them harder to package and ship. It’s a logistical headache that nobody wants to solve for a niche product.
But You Can Find Them… If You’re Determined
If you’re now on a mission to taste a turkey egg, check your local farmer’s market. Ask around—some small farms sell them seasonally, especially in spring. You might have to order ahead and pay a premium.
Or, if you’re feeling really wild, you could raise your own turkeys. Just know they’re noisy, messy, and they’ll follow you around like a feathery stalker. I’m not saying they’ll judge your life choices, but… they will.
