The aurora happens when charged particles from the sun crash into Earth’s atmosphere. Usually, this happens way up north, near the Arctic Circle. But when the sun throws a big tantrum (a solar storm), the lights can dip much farther south.
That’s your cue. The UK’s best chance for a show is during periods of high solar activity, which peaks roughly every 11 years. Spoiler alert: we’re approaching the next peak now, so 2026–2026 could be your golden ticket.
You’ll also need dark skies and a clear view north. Light pollution is the enemy—think streetlights, city glow, and that one neighbour who leaves their garden floodlight on all night. Yes, we’re looking at you, Dave.
