The Outer Banks are raw in a way that resorts aren’t. There are no skyscrapers, no boardwalks with arcades, and very few stoplights. Instead, you get massive dunes called Jockey’s Ridge that look like the Sahara Desert crashed into a beach party, and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse that was literally picked up and moved inland because the ocean said "move your house, please."

The weather is unpredictable like a toddler with a remote control. You can have blue skies, then a fog bank rolls in, then it clears up, and two minutes later a seagull steals your sandwich. The locals call this "a typical Tuesday."
And the light? The light out there is a punch. Sunrise makes the whole sky look like a bruise of pink and orange, while sunset turns the water into a mirror of fire. It’s the kind of beauty that makes you forget you have sand in your swimsuit from three days ago.
