Imagine this: it’s the 29th day of Ramadan. You’ve just finished iftar, and your phone is buzzing like a trapped bee. “Did anyone see the moon?” “My cousin in Birmingham says he saw it.” “No, that’s just a streetlight.” It’s the Olympics of speculation, and everyone from your uncle to your neighbour’s cat is an expert. By the time the moon is officially sighted, you’ve already checked four different apps, two Twitter accounts, and your mum’s gut feeling.
In 2026, the Islamic calendar suggests the crescent will be visible in the UK around sunset on Sunday, 22nd March. If the moon is kind and cooperative—like a well-behaved child at a wedding—then Eid will be Monday, 23rd March. If it decides to play hard to get, Tuesday it is. Either way, prepare for a 9pm text from your mosque saying, “Eid confirmed for tomorrow!” while you’re still in your pyjamas eating leftover samosas.
What Does This Mean for Your Everyday Life?
Well, for starters, you’ll need to book that day off work as soon as you can. In the UK, Eid isn’t a public holiday, which means you’re either using annual leave or having the “very sorry, boss, but it’s a religious obligation” conversation. Pro tip: block the 23rd and 24th in your calendar now, and label it “Family Emergency 🕌✨”. Nobody questions that. Your colleagues will just assume you’re dealing with your eccentric relatives—which, technically, you will be.
Then there’s the food prep. The day before Eid, your kitchen looks like a flour-based crime scene. Someone is frying samosas, someone else is rolling sheermal, and your oven is working harder than you do during a deadline. And don’t forget the sheer joy of realising you’ve run out of vermicelli for the sheer khurma at 11pm. That’s when you call your aunt, who somehow always has a spare packet, because that’s the unspoken law of Eid.
