Eeyore eats thistles. That’s it. Thistles are essentially spiky weeds that taste like regret and dry grass. Imagine your entire food pyramid being based on the vegetable equivalent of sandpaper. No wonder he’s always grumpy. He’s running on negative calories and pure existential dread.
He also loves a good “Eeyore’s Birthday” celebration. In one story, his friends give him a popped balloon and a broken pot of honey. Does he complain? Of course not. He gets excited—by his standards, anyway—because the balloon can hold the honey, even if it leaks everywhere. He sees the possible in the catastrophically broken.
The One Time He Was Happy (Sort Of)
Believe it or not, there is a recorded instance of Eeyore being happy. It happens in the 2011 Disney film Winnie the Pooh when his tail is finally reattached correctly. He doesn’t smile—that would be too much—but he does a little donkey wiggle. It’s adorable and terrifying at the same time, like watching a statue sneeze.

That tail, by the way, is the key to his personality. When Owl uses it as a doorbell, Eeyore is devastated. Without his tail, he feels incomplete. It’s his sense of identity, his emotional support appendage. Most of us have a security blanket; Eeyore’s is literally attached to his backside.
