Most of it ended up in landfills. Or in charity shops, still priced at 5 pounds. Some of it lives in your garage, probably. Do you still have that miniature foosball table that warped in the sun? Of course, you do.
Everything 5 Pounds
There was a brief, glorious moment in 2017 when a real live turtle was found for sale at a 5-pound shop. No one knows where that turtle is now. It’s a legend. A five-pound legend.
The idea of the store was better than the reality. It promised we could all be kings of cheap crap for a fiver. And for a while, we were.
The Legacy
Today, a few remain, but they’re sad. They sell frayed phone chargers and dusty plastic toys. The fun is gone. The gamble is predictable. You know you’ll be disappointed.
But we should celebrate them. They taught us the sheer joy of a bad decision for a fiver. They gave us conversations that started with, “Hey, remember that weird thing I bought from that shop?”
Everything 5 Pounds didn’t just sell junk. It sold curiosity. It sold the feeling that for a small price, you could own a piece of the unknown. That is fun. That is worth talking about.
So raise a glass of that suspiciously cheap lemonade. To the shops that are gone. And to the one paper shredder that actually worked for two whole days. You were the best of us.
