First, his mentor Jason Gideon abandoned the team without a goodbye. Reid worshipped Gideon, and that loss hit him harder than a punch to the gut. Then, in Season 2, Reid got kidnapped by a guy named Tobias Hankel—a schizophrenic killer who literally injected him with Dilaudid and made him dig his own grave.
That experience broke something in him. He developed an addiction to painkillers, and if you blinked, you missed the agonizing withdrawal scene where he hallucinated his dead father. I remember thinking, “Wow, this show really wants us to suffer with him, doesn’t it?”
Then Came the Deaths
And just when you thought Reid had hit rock bottom, the writers handed him a shovel and said, “Keep digging.” In Season 3, he lost his girlfriend Lila to a serial killer she was profiling. That one stung, but it was a warm-up.
