pH stands for “potential of hydrogen.” Fancy science-speak for “how angry are the hydrogen ions right now?” It’s a scale from 0 to 14. Seven is neutral, like a boring Tuesday.
Below 7 is acidic. Think lemon juice—sour, zingy, and ready to strip paint. Above 7 is alkaline (or basic). Think baking soda—chill and slightly bitter.
Each number is a tenfold jump. A pH of 6 is ten times more acidic than a pH of 7. Wild, right?
