If you just made a claim in April or early May 2026, your first payment might be a bit of a rollercoaster. The first payment usually takes five weeks from the date you submitted your claim. So if you applied on April 15th, you’re looking at a payment around May 20th—give or take a bank holiday shove.

And let’s be honest: that first wait is brutal. You’re basically playing a game of financial chess against a slow-moving bureaucracy. If you’re struggling during that gap, you can request an advance payment. It’s a loan you pay back later, but it’s better than eating plain pasta for a month. (Unless you really love plain pasta, in which case, respect.)
Your work coach might mention a “new claim advance” like it’s a secret menu item. It’s not secret—ask for it. Your bank account will thank you.
When May 2026 gets weird (it always does)
May 2026 has two bank holidays, which throws the entire payment schedule into a game of musical chairs. If your normal payday lands on Monday, 4th May, you’ll likely get paid on Friday, 2nd May. That means you have a stretch of five extra days before your next payment in June. Budget accordingly—or panic-spend on snacks. I won’t judge.
If your payday is Monday, 25th May, same story: expect your cash on Friday, 22nd May. That’s a whole week where you might feel rich, then broke, then confused. Welcome to the club.
Here’s a pro tip: set a reminder on your phone for one week before each bank holiday. That’s when the DWP usually updates your payment date in your online account. You’ll see the shift. You’ll sigh. You’ll move on.
