Part of why this rumor endures is our culture’s obsession with true crime. We binge podcasts like Serial, devour Netflix docuseries, and feel a strange intimacy with criminals we’ve never met. Huntley’s case is a sad, iconic chapter in UK crime history—one that’s been referenced in shows like Broadchurch and even parodied on Inside No. 9. The public memory is long, and with it comes a morbid curiosity: Is he still suffering?
The answer is yes, he’s still incarcerated at HMP Frankland in County Durham, a high-security facility often called “Monster Mansion” because it houses notorious killers. But no, he isn’t dead. Life goes on—for him, behind bars, and for us, navigating our own daily dramas. It’s a strange parallel, but it reminds us that even the darkest stories don’t get neat endings.
Fun Little Fact: Prison Pop Culture
Did you know that HMP Frankland has been featured in the video game Prison Architect as a real-world model? Players can design their own high-security wings, inspired by the very institution where Huntley resides. It’s a bizarre intersection of gaming, true crime, and architecture—proof that even dark places can fuel creative hobbies.
