This is not a flight. You can bring a full suitcase and a duffel bag without anyone side-eyeing you. Pack layers, because Amtrak likes to play a game of “arctic blast vs. desert heat” with their climate control.
A travel pillow is non-negotiable if you’re in coach, and a portable charger is your best friend. Outlets are scattered, but they’re as rare as a quiet baby on a plane. Bring your own entertainment—a book, a podcast, or a journal. The train is a perfect excuse to do something analog.
Fun fact: The Lake Shore Limited used to serve real dining car meals with white tablecloths until 2018. The current flex dining (microwaved boxes) is fine, but grab a proper meal at Union Station’s food court in Chicago over Amtrak’s offering.
