There’s an unspoken rulebook you must follow. First, you must go in a group that contains one person who is genuinely terrified. That’s the entertainment. You’ll spend half the night holding their arm, whispering “it’s just a bloke in a mask” while you yourself are sweating through your hoodie. The other half of the night is spent eating a sausage roll that costs more than a cinema ticket, because you deserve it after all that emotional labour.
Also, the weather will inevitably be miserable. It’s a law of physics. The moment you buy a Fright Night ticket, the temperature drops to just above “huddling for warmth.” You’ll see groups of teenagers wrapped in each other’s Primark jackets, shivering and laughing. It’s a bonding experience. You’ll look at your mate with foggy breath and think, “I would definitely sacrifice you to a werewolf to get on The Swarm faster.” That’s love.
The Queue is the Real Horror
Let’s talk about the queue. You will wait 90 minutes to walk through a 10-minute maze. That’s the real horror story. You’ll stand there, your feet turning to blocks of ice, listening to the terrible theme music on a loop. You’ll start to question your life choices. “Did I really need to do this? I could be at home watching Bake Off.” But then the line moves, and you see the other people stumbling out, clutching their chests, and you remember why you came.

The best part is the actors in the queue. They’re masters of psychological warfare. They’ll pick out the one person who looks tough and whisper something deeply unnerving. I saw a zombie once just stand next to a guy for five minutes, staring at him in silence. The guy cracked. He offered the zombie his half-eaten bag of Minstrels. The zombie just tilted its head. Absolute dominance.
