In hair-color terms, “highlighted” usually refers to sections of hair lightened and then toned to create contrast. For black and brown highlighted hair, the highlights are typically in the brown spectrum—anything from cool ash brown to warm cocoa, caramel-like warmth, or deep espresso tones—against a base that reads black, dark brown, or near-black.
The key is that you’re not just choosing a color. You’re choosing a contrast strategy. Very subtle contrast makes hair look thicker and shinier; higher contrast gives more visible stripes or ribbon-like pieces. Texture matters, too: curly hair often shows highlights in tighter, more frequent “bands,” while straight hair makes each section read more sharply.
