Before you burn the house down (please don’t), let’s sort through the usual suspects. The most common culprit is the carpet beetle larva—yeah, those little brownish-black guys that look like fuzzy footballs with legs. They’re not biting you, but they’re munching on your wool sweaters and pet hair, which is its own kind of betrayal. Another frequent flyer is the booklouse, which is ironically terrified of actually damaging your books—they just like the mold on the glue. Charming, right?
Then there are fungus gnats, the tiny black flies that hover around your overwatered houseplants like they own the place. If you see them rising from the soil in a little cloud when you water your fern, congratulations—you’re running a gnat motel. And let’s not forget the springtail, a tiny black bug that jumps when disturbed, making you think you’re hallucinating. These guys show up when you’ve got dampness near a leaky pipe or a wet bathroom floor.
