For most of us, boarding school sounds like something out of Harry Potter—minus the magic and plus a lot of Latin homework. For George, it’s a huge deal because he’ll be the first heir to the throne in like a bajillion years to go away to school. William and Kate are clearly trying to give him a “normal” childhood, whatever that means when your dad will be king.
The royals are Mum and Dad first, but they also have to prep this kid for the throne. So, sending him off with a trunk full of socks and a teddy bear is a delicate operation. I’m pretty sure the packing list includes “one emotional support blanket” and “six stiff upper lips for emergency use.”
How do you even “practice” sleeping away from home?
It’s genius, really. Kate and William have been letting George stay over at friends’ houses, maybe even with his cousins, Charlotte and Louis. Imagine a sleepover at Kensington Palace: they probably play Monopoly, eat pizza, and then someone accidentally spills the crown jewels. It’s like sleepaway camp, but the camp counselors are dressed in tweed.
These nights away are the royal equivalent of a dress rehearsal. George is learning that Mum and Dad aren’t coming to tuck him in every single night. So far, so good—no reported meltdowns or royal decrees demanding a midnight snack. He’s basically a trooper in training trousers.
I bet the trick is starting small. First, a night at Granny’s place (yes, that Granny), then a weekend with a school friend. By the time September rolls around, George will be a pro at surviving without a personal butler. Progress is measured in hours spent not texting your parents for a ride home.
