You’ll never see the Northern Lights from your couch. (Unless you’re watching a YouTube video, but that doesn’t count.) So put on your warmest coat, grab a friend or a blanket, and step outside. You’ve got nothing to lose except an hour of sleep.
In Pictures: Northern Lights seen across the UK - BBC Newsround
And if you miss it tonight? There’s always tomorrow. The sun isn’t done throwing its tantrums anytime soon. British aurora opportunities are like buses—you wait forever for one, then several show up at 2 AM when you’re in your pyjamas.
One last thing: don’t forget to look up. Seriously. So many people stare at their phones, trying to check the time, that they miss the actual show. The sky is right there, doing its best impression of a disco ball. Pay attention.
A Little Science Joke (Because We Deserve It)
Why did the aurora break up with the moon? Because it needed space. Okay, I’ll see myself out. But seriously, the aurora is just charged particles from the sun bumping into oxygen and nitrogen in our atmosphere. It’s physics, but it looks like wizardry.
So tonight, keep your eyes on the northern horizon, your phone charged, and your expectations flexible. You might see a dazzling green curtain dancing across the stars. Or you might see a dark sky and a bunch of frustrated sheep. Either way, you’ll have a story.
