Markers and many inks act like paint—pigments or dyes suspended in a carrier fluid—but they behave differently because the pigment is laid down in layers and the ink can have varying transparency. If your yellow looks patchy, streaky, or too pale, it may be a layering issue rather than a mixing problem.
If your set includes yellow but you want a specific shade, treat it like “tinting.” Add a small amount of a warm shade (often orange/red) for deeper warmth, or a tiny amount of green for a cooler yellow. Test on scrap paper first; marker paper and cardstock can change how yellow reads.
For fabric dyes and some craft dyes, follow the product’s mixing guidance. Dyes can react with water hardness and fibre type, and the same ratio can dye cotton differently than polyester. When you’re learning how to make the colour yellow with dyes, consistency matters as much as colour theory.
