I know what you’re thinking. “Afternoon tea? Isn’t that for fancy hotels or your nan’s best china?” Absolutely not. M&S has cracked the code. They’ve taken all the posh vibes of a traditional afternoon tea and made it accessible, like a friendly neighbor who shows up with a plate of goodies and says, “Fancy a cuppa?”
It’s perfect for a quick treat. You don’t need a reservation, a dress code, or a trust fund. You just need a craving for something lovely.
What’s On The Plate? (Spoiler: It’s Delicious)
The star of the show is the tiered stand. You get three glorious levels of joy: sandwiches, scones, and sweets. Each one is a tiny miracle. The sandwiches are fresh—think classic fillings like egg mayo, ham and mustard, and cucumber cream cheese—on soft, crustless bread that melts in your mouth.
Then, the scone. Oh, the scone. It’s perfectly crumbly on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and comes with a dollop of clotted cream and strawberry jam. You have to decide: jam first or cream first? (I’m team jam-first, but don’t tell the Cornish.)
And the sweets? Tiny cakes, a mini chocolate éclair, and a fruit tart that looks like it was made by a tiny pastry chef with excellent taste. It’s like dessert, but in miniature form, so you can eat all of them without feeling guilty. Guilt-free gluttony—my favorite kind.
