First off, this isn’t your historic city-centre M&S with the fancy food hall and the suited staff. The Vanguard store is a hybrid—part supermarket, part click-and-collect hub, and part mystery box. It’s tucked away off the A64, near the Vanguard Shopping Park, which sounds straightforward but really isn’t.
You see, the times shift depending on the day of the week, and sometimes even the season. Monday to Saturday? That’s usually 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. But don’t you dare show up at 7:45 PM on a Wednesday thinking you’ll grab a quick Percy Pig—they’ll be wiping down the tills already. And Sunday? That’s a different beast entirely: 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM, like most large stores in the UK. Yes, I know, it’s a bizarre hour for cheese shopping.
Bank Holidays: The Real Confuser
Here’s where it gets fun (read: frustrating). On bank holidays, the Vanguard M&S often operates on reduced hours—sometimes opening at 9:00 AM and closing at 6:00 PM. But then, on the Easter Monday or the Christmas Eve, they’ll suddenly close at 5:00 PM with no warning. I once drove twenty minutes on a Bank Holiday Monday only to find a sign: “Closed today for staff training.” Training! On a day off! I felt like I’d been personally pranked by the M&S board.
My advice? Never trust your memory. Always check the store-specific page on the Marks & Spencer website or Google Maps—but even Google gets it wrong sometimes. I’ve seen the opening hours change mid-week due to “unforeseen circumstances,” which is corporate-speak for “we forgot to update the sign.”
