Imagine a hula hoop of light around the North Pole. That’s the auroral oval. You don’t need to be in the Arctic. But you do need to be under that magical hoop.
If you’re in Alaska, Canada, Iceland, Norway, or Sweden, you’re in the VIP section. Tonight could be your night. But guess what? Sometimes, the hoop drops south.
My friends in Michigan, Maine, and even Scotland have seen them. One time, the lights danced in Texas. Yes, Texas. That is the kind of chaos we love.
The Quirky Checklist
You can’t just step outside. You need a plan. First, find total darkness. Streetlights are the enemy. So are city glow and that one neighbor who leaves their porch light on forever.
Next, check the Kp-index. It’s a scale of 0 to 9. A Kp of 4 is good for northern states. A Kp of 7? Run outside. That’s a full-on light show.
Honestly, a Kp of 5 is usually enough for a fantastic night. Don’t wait for a 9—that’s like waiting for a unicorn to play the trumpet. Go at a 4 or 5.
