Bond’s whole job is to jet off to exotic locations, flirt with dangerous people, and save the world from evil masterminds who monologue too much. MI5 would have to fill out paperwork for that trip.
Here’s a joke for you: MI5 catches spies who sneak into your house. MI6 catches spies who sneak into other people’s houses. And Bond? He sneaks into every house, sets it on fire, and still looks cool doing it. That’s pure MI6 energy.
Why people get confused (and it’s not your fault)
Blame the movies! In the early Bond films, especially the ones with Sean Connery, there’s a scene where “M” hands Bond a gun and says, “for Queen and Country.” Nobody clarifies the agency because it’s assumed you know. But then Skyfall came along and literally showed us the actual MI6 headquarters in London getting blown up. That was a big hint—even Q’s gadgets live there.
Also, James Bond is often called “007” — and that “00” prefix isn’t just for swagger. It means he has a license to kill, a special status within MI6. MI5 agents don’t get cool code numbers like that. They get things like “Agent Turner” and a pension plan. Bond gets a Walther PPK and a Martinis. No contest.

Oh, and fun fact: Ian Fleming, the author who created Bond, worked for Britain’s Naval Intelligence during WWII. That was a precursor to MI6, not MI5. So even the creator was in the “overseas mischief” business. It’s in the DNA.
