By A Great Reckoning (2016), Gamache becomes the head of the Sûreté Academy. Yes, he finally gets the corner office—but it’s a trap. This book has a map, a hidden room, and a betrayal that will make you gasp on a bus. Trust me, I’ve been that person.
Then Glass Houses (2017) takes the series to a courtroom drama—with a mysterious figure in a cobra costume. Don’t ask; just read it. And Kingdom of the Blind (2018) involves a frozen tundra and a long-lost will. It’s not the place to start, but it’s brilliant.
How to Read All Louise Penny Gamache Books In Order (Chronological)
The most recent books—A Better Man (2019), All the Devils Are Here (2026), The Madness of Crowds (2026), A World of Curiosities (2026), and The Grey Wolf (2026)—push Gamache into personal and political storms. You will need a flowchart for family ties and a glass of wine for the tension.
A Final, Honest Plea
Here’s the deal: you can jump into the series at book twelve, but then you’ll miss the slow dance between Gamache and his wife Reine-Marie, or the miracle of a single rose that appears in book three. The joy of this series isn’t just the whodunit; it’s the who-cares-about-the-village-over-decades.
You’ll meet bookstore owner Myrna, artist Clara, and the grumpy poet Ruth—who will steal your heart with her one-liners and her duck named Rosa. I’m serious about the duck. Read them in order, and you’ll understand why fans whisper “Three Pines” like a prayer.
So grab Still Life first. Brew a pot of tea. And don’t blame me if you end up buying a cottage in the Eastern Townships. Welcome to the family.
