First, go on a weekday evening. The crowds thin out, and you’ll have more elbow room to admire the hand-painted Christmas crackers without getting smacked by a tourist’s selfie stick. Second, wear your most comfortable boots—the ground is a mix of cobblestone, mud, and what I can only assume is spilled Glühwein. It’s a hazard, but a festive one.
Also, bring cash. Some stalls are charmingly old-school and don’t take cards. You don’t want to be the person begging strangers for a pound so you can buy a felted hedgehog. I’ve been that person. It’s humbling.
