Close the lid but do not latch it completely. You want the lid to be snug, but with a slight gap or with the drain plug open. Dry ice produces CO₂ gas, which is heavier than air. It will sink and fill the cooler. If you seal it airtight, you’re creating a pressure cooker from hell. I once saw a cooler lid fly off and hit a ceiling fan—it was like a horror movie, but with potato salad.
If your cooler has a venting plug, unscrew it halfway. If not, just leave one corner of the lid unlatched. You’ll lose a little coldness, but you’ll keep your eyebrows. Also, always transport the cooler in a ventilated area—your car’s trunk, not the backseat with the windows up. CO₂ can accumulate and make you drowsy. You don’t want to drive to a picnic and never wake up.
