Here’s the only formula you need to remember: Part divided by Whole, times 100. That’s it. Put the little piece you have over the big total, then multiply by 100.
Think about splitting a pizza. You and three friends order one large pie. That’s four people sharing 8 slices. You eat two slices. What percentage of the pizza did you eat? Part (your 2 slices) divided by Whole (8 slices) = 0.25. Times that by 100, and bam: 25%.
Now you can argue with confidence that you only ate a quarter of the pizza. That’s empowering.
Let’s Try It With Your Morning Coffee
You buy a big bag of coffee beans that weighs 500 grams. You use 25 grams for your morning brew. What percentage of the bag did you use? Part (25) divided by Whole (500) = 0.05. Times 100 = 5%.
See? You just unofficially became the coffee accountant of your household. “Honey, we’ve only used 5% of the beans!” You’ll sound very scientific.
It’s also great for knowing if you’re getting ripped off on your phone battery. 50% battery isn’t “half dead” — it’s half alive. Perspective matters.
