If you want to feel a little more like a pro, or if AutoSum just isn’t your style, you can type the formula yourself. It’s still super simple.
Click any empty cell and type this exactly: =AVERAGE(. Then, highlight the cells with your numbers—like A1 through A10—and close the parenthesis. It should look like =AVERAGE(A1:A10).
Hit Enter, and you’ll see the average appear. That’s it. No rocket science, no complicated drop-down menus, just you and a very obedient spreadsheet. High-five your keyboard if you feel fancy.

What About Blanks or Zeros?
Here’s the thing: Excel is smart, but it’s not a mind reader. If you have empty cells in your list, the AVERAGE function ignores them. Great for skipping lazy Sunday data.
But if you have a cell with zero typed in it? Excel counts that as a number. So a zero will drag your average down—just like that one person in a group project who did nothing. Be careful with your zeros.
If you want to ignore zeros too, you’ll need the AVERAGEIF function—but that’s a story for another day. For now, just remember: blanks are ghosts, zeros are real.
