Okay, you want pro results? Use Select and Mask. This is the big guns. Make a rough selection, then click the “Select and Mask” button up in the Options Bar.
Feather Edges in Photoshop for Smooth Transitions
You’ll see a bunch of sliders. Look for “Feather” on the right panel. Slide it gently. Watch your edge turn from crispy to velvety in real-time.
You can also paint with the Refine Edge Brush Tool (that little brush icon). Paint over tricky areas like hair or fur. It’s like Photoshop reads your mind.
A Word of Caution
Don’t go overboard. Feathering too much (like 250 px on a small image) will turn your subject into a ghost. You’ll lose detail. Start small—5 to 15 px—and increase only if needed.
Also, remember: feathering is destructive on the original selection. You can’t “un-feather” it. So if you’re nervous, duplicate your layer first. Ctrl+J is your safety net.
