The honest answer is: Nobody knows for sure. The real number could be 50 million or 200 million. But the consensus keeps coming back to that big, round figure of around 100 million. It’s a beautiful, messy mystery.
What we do know is that rats are here to stay. They are incredibly smart, resilient, and frankly, impressive. They’ve mastered the art of living alongside us, and they’ve won the population game.
So raise a glass (carefully, away from any crumbs) to the humble rat. There are an awful lot of them out there, and they’re probably having a better week than you think. Just don’t let them into your kitchen.
