Did you know sunflowers are heliotropic? Young flowers literally turn their heads to follow the sun. By the time seeds mature, they face east. That’s why the backs of the heads get so much sun – they’re tanning their faces.
Also, one sunflower can have up to 2,000 seeds. If you eat every single one, you’ve consumed a flower’s entire year of work. That’s power. Or a stomach ache. It’s a toss-up.
If you’re feeling bold, you can even pickle the unopened flower buds once bloom. Tastes like artichoke hearts. Just don’t blame me if your neighbors think you’re crazy when you eat a flower before it flowers.
