Let’s get the boring stuff out of the way. The straight-line flight distance from Miami to Dallas is roughly 1,120 miles (about 1,800 kilometers). That’s the number the birds use. But unless you’re a pelican with a pilot’s license, you’ll fly the actual route, which adds a few extra miles due to air traffic and weather. Fun fact: that distance is roughly the same as driving from New York City to Chicago—except you don’t have to stop for bad gas-station coffee.
In the air, that translates to an average flight time of about 3 hours and 10 minutes. Why the extra 25 minutes from my earlier misery? Because that 6 a.m. flight had a tailwind pushing us like a giant hair dryer. Westbound flights (like Miami to Dallas) usually take a bit longer because you’re fighting the jet stream. Thanks, atmosphere. Eastbound? You might shave off 20 minutes. It’s the universe’s way of reminding you that physics has a sense of humor.
