Let’s be honest: you’ll never think about your lip balm the same way. This is everyday magic. A substance that defies categories, laughs at physics, and still makes your chapped skin feel amazing.

It also explains why it’s so good for everything. Liquid enough to spread, solid enough to stay put. That’s why mechanics use it on spark plugs. And why your grandma uses it on her elbows. And why some people (gross, but true) use it as a makeup remover.
Vaseline is the ultimate multitasker because it lives in two worlds at once.
A Little History Lesson (Don’t Worry, It’s Short)
Petroleum jelly was discovered in 1859 by some oil rig workers. They called it “rod wax.” Catchy, right? It was the sticky goo that gummed up their pumps.
But one smart worker—a chemist named Robert Chesebrough—saw potential. He distilled it, called it Vaseline (from the German word for water, “wasser,” and the Greek word for oil, “elaion”). So its name literally means “water-oil.”
Even its name is confused about whether it’s wet or dry. We love that.
