The team there are masters of the casual encounter. They don’t launch into a lecture about flossing the moment you sit down. Instead, you get a, “Alright, mate? How’s the week treating you?” It’s so disarming, you almost forget they’re about to poke around your gums with a metal hook. The hygienist, I swear, must have a secret degree in hypnotherapy because they make the whole ordeal feel like an awkward but necessary massage for your mouth.
I had a filling done last month, and the dentist—who looks like he should be running a vintage record shop, he’s that chill—actually stopped mid-drill to ask about my holiday plans. “You going to Skegness again?” he asked, wiping a smudge of composite resin off his glove. I nodded, salivating over a suction tube, and he just laughed. It’s that kind of banter that turns a dreaded appointment into an amusing anecdote you can tell your mates over a pint later.

The Fear Factor, Defeated by a Chat
We all have that one fear. Mine is the sound of the drill. It’s like someone running a fork down a chalkboard while a small angry bee buzzes inside your ear. But here, they’ve got this trick. They put on a podcast. Actually. I was getting a crown prepped, and the dentist turned on a true crime documentary on a tablet mounted to the ceiling. I spent the next twenty minutes trying to figure out who killed the butler, completely forgetting a man was reshaping my back molar with industrial-grade sandpaper.
They also don’t make you feel guilty about your sugary breakfast. Ever told a dentist you had treacle tart for breakfast? Most of them look at you like you just confessed to arson. The team at Burton High Street Dental Practice? They just nod and say, “Nice one. You’re only human. Let’s just keep the enamel happy, yeah?” It’s that lack of judgment that makes you actually want to go back. Who knew that was a thing?
