Now, let’s be honest. Modern Boxing Day has strayed a bit from its "help the needy" roots. If you walk into a mall on December 26th, you’ll see people grabbing 50% off electronics, not dropping coins into an alms box. It’s a little ironic.
But here’s the thing: the spirit of that old-fashioned box is still around. Many people still use the day to donate to food banks, volunteer at shelters, or simply give a generous tip to their mail carrier or garbage collector. That’s a very real "Christmas box" tradition, even if it’s just a card with some cash.
So maybe we can reclaim a little bit of the old magic. Next time you’re out shopping for a discounted TV, why not drop a coin in a charity bucket on your way in? It might not be a medieval alms box, but it’s a nice nod to the original purpose of the day.
