After a Google deep-dive (and some very dramatic sighs), I learned a few things. First, panic is free and deeply satisfying. Second, these little guys have names.
Most likely, they’re carpet beetles or fungus gnats. Carpet beetles look like tiny, black ladybugs with bad intentions. Fungus gnats are the ones that fly slowly and annoyingly, like they’re drunk on mold.
Both are gross. Both are uninvited. But here’s the kicker: they’re just looking for a snack. And apparently, my house is a five-star restaurant for them.
The Buffet You Didn’t Know You Were Hosting
Newsflash: your house is full of bug food. Carpet beetles love dead skin, pet hair, and old wool socks under your bed. Charming, right? You are their walking feast.
Fungus gnats are even more passive-aggressive. They love damp soil. So if you’ve got a houseplant you’ve been over-watering (guilty), you’re running a gnat nursery. Congrats, plant parent!
And the worst part? They don’t bite. So you can’t even get mad at them for being vampires. They’re just… there. Existing. Mocking you.
