Here’s the kicker: autotrophs make the food, and heterotrophs eat the food. But then heterotrophs poop, die, and rot. And guess what feeds on that rot? Autotrophs love that sweet, sweet decomposed poop.
It’s a perfect, slightly disgusting loop. The sun powers the autotrophs. Autotrophs power the heterotrophs. Heterotrophs recycle the nutrients back to the autotrophs. Everyone wins (except the carrot).
So next time you see a dandelion poking through a crack in the sidewalk, give it a little nod of respect. It’s an autotroph, doing all the work. And you? You’re a heterotroph, doing your part by eating a sandwich. High five for teamwork.
Now go eat something. Your cells are depending on the consumer side of this friendship. And maybe thank a plant while you’re at it.
