He is best known for his work on the BBC series The Wednesday Play, Play for Today, and Playhouse. He has also directed feature films such as The National Health (1973), The Final Programme (1973), and The Shout (1978). Battersby was born in 1936 in London, England. He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and began his career as an assistant director in the early 1960s.
